ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) - Two people are dead after a rolling gun battle on I-44 near the Hampton Avenue exit.
Just before noon Wednesday morning, an off-duty police officer witnessed the shots fired between two vehicles on westbound I-44. The vehicles got off at the Hampton exit, made a U-turn and got back on 44 eastbound, continuing to fire shots.
Guns and other ballistic evidence were found scattered on the highway. Police shut down the ramps and several lanes on 44 for some time, as they worked to recover the evidence.
Meanwhile, the off-duty officer followed one of the cars, a white Dodge Charger, but ultimately lost sight of it. A short time later, police located the dodge in an alley behind Park Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets in LaSalle Park, just south of downtown.
Police discovered one passenger dead in the backseat. It appears the front seat passenger left the car, but didn’t make it more than a few feet before he collapsed, also succumbing to his gunshot wounds. Both victims are black males, likely between 20 and 30 years old.
Police are still looking for the driver of the white Dodge, who fled the scene, abandoning the car and his companions.
Police are also searching for the suspect’s vehicle, a dark 4-door sedan with tinted windows. It is unclear how many people were inside that car.
This rolling gun battle resulted in two deaths, and a scary situation for drivers on Hampton and 44. St. Louis Police Lt. John Green explained, “It is a hazardous situation, thank God nobody else was injured in the incident that we know of. We did have some accidents, but it’s a very dangerous situation that put everybody at risk, going home from work, just going about their daily travels.”
