JUPITER, FL (KTVI) – Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright said while he could pitch bullpen right now, he’s going to fly to St. Louis for a medical exam as a precautionary measure after experiencing abdominal soreness at spring training.
Talking to reporters Wednesday morning in Jupiter, Florida, Wainwright said he felt a twinge during a workout. He was re-racking a 45-pound plate when he felt something in his abdominal area. He finished his workout, but alerted team trainers.
Wainwright would not speculate about a diagnosis, promising he would let the public know after speaking with doctors. The pitcher will meet with doctors at Washington University on Thursday.
“I don’t foresee this being problem, but I just don’t know,” he said.
Wainwright stressed he wasn’t feeling discomfort pitching, only when he runs or lunges. He said if he had to field a grounder he might feel something.
“Maybe I just pitch this and don’t let anybody hit the ball,” he quipped.
