UNIVERSITY CITY, MO (KTVI) - A University City female high school student reports she was sexually assaulted inside the school during a basketball game in early January. School district officials told parents in an email Wednesday they began an investigation immediately and contacted police.

Three other University City High School students, a juvenile and two 17-year olds, were taken into custody but released pending possible criminal charges. University City police learned about the alleged attack on January 7, one day after it occurred.

A police spokesman said the results of a "horough investigation were turned over to both the St. Louis County Family Court in the case of the juvenile and the county prosecuting attorney's office for the two 17-year-olds.

University City High School girls' varsity and junior varsity basketball teams were scheduled to play games on January 6, the day the alleged crime occurred.

School officials would not discuss any possible disciplinary action against the students, but indicated "school safety is our number one priority."
