GRANITE CITY, IL (KPLR) – A teenager faces charges from a fatal accident that occurred on June 5, 2014 in Granite City.

The accident killed 35-year-old Jack W. Hoppe of Granite City, on a bicycle and walking path near Victory Drive.

Monday the Madison County State's Attorney announced that a 16-year-old male from Granite City has been arrested in the hit and run death of Jack Hoppe.

Relatives say Jack Hoppe like to walk the trail and lay down along the trail at night and look at the stars. But on the night of June 6th, Hoppe told his family he was going to sleep on the bike trail because it was a nice night.  The next morning around 6 am a jogger reported seeing Hoppe's body on the trail.  Detectives determined that a car had hit him and drove off.

Motor vehicles are not allowed on the trail.  The Madison County State’s Attorney officials said they would not do media interviews because the suspect is a juvenile, and is being held at the Madison County Detention Home in Edwardsville.

Investigators aren`t saying why the car left the road and went onto the bike trail and no details were given as to how the suspect was arrested or why it took more than six months to bring charges.
