Arrest made in connection to college student killed near City Museum downtown

BELLEVILLE, IL (KTVI) – Late Monday night St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly announced arrest and charges related to the murder of former De Smet high school student Robert Christman.

Christman was shot and killed near the City Museum on Sunday, January 11th following a night out with his brother and a female friend.

Police say a gunman opened the back passenger door of the vehicle and ordered the female to hand over her purse. Some sort resistance was offered over the purse and the gunman fired a single shot that struck Christman.

Kelly has charged Aza Thompson of East St. Louis with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, armed violence, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of several handguns.

Additionally, Kelly charged Tony Ross of East St. Louis with attempted first degree murder, and possession of a stolen vehicle. The attempted murder charge is unrelated to Christman case.

Both Thompson and Ross have had their bbonds set at $750,000.
