A three-year-old Chihuahua in Southern California has a second chance at life after a near-fatal surgery.

Julietta was dropped off at the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility with a broken leg on Tuesday.  The staff feared she was abused. She underwent surgery on the leg, but after the procedure, her heart stopped beating.

Dr. Julia Maher, who did the operation, said the dog didn't breathe for two minutes. Maher and a veterinarian technician worked hard to resuscitate her and, miraculously,  she began breathing again. The medical staff says that rarely happens.

Julietta is still recovering but is expected to be put up for adoption soon.
