COLLINSVILLE, IL (KPLR) - Investigators at Illinois state police headquarters want to make sure you are aware of a case they are working right now involving toy guns being altered to fire real bullets.

The weapons were discovered in December in Granite City.

One was a super soaker squirt gun that still had its plastic colorful exterior.

However on the inside this was no toy.

The toy gun was set up to fire shot gun shells.

The other gun that investigators found was a toy pistol that was set up to fire 22 caliber bullets.

Investigators are not releasing any more info on the case as it is an active investigation, but Commander Derek Wise did offer a warning. He says it's actually harder than you think to tell the difference between a real and a fake.

Commander Wise urges anyone who may have seen an altered toy gun to contact Illinois state police.
