(KPLR) – Tuesday President Obama signed a bill revamping the government’s child care assistance programs.

An Imperial woman was there to see the first changes made in the law in 20 years.

Our partners at the Post-Dispatch say Shelley Blecha got the invite from officials yesterday.

She had been sharing the story of her son’s accidental suffocation at an illegal Arnold home day care since 2007.

The new bill will require states to conduct at least one annual inspection at day care centers, and workers must be trained in first aid and other safety needs.

Federally subsidized child care providers will have to conduct background checks on their workers.
