JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KPLR) – Many consider it a rite of passage, and the 2014 deer hunting season kicked off with the largest harvest in three years. This year’s hunters took in over 91,000 deer in the first weekend of the firearms season. That’s the second highest total since 2010, when nearly 98,000 deer were harvested.

The top counties were Franklin with 1,839, Howell with 1,793 and Callaway County with 1,791.

The Missouri Department of Conservation only reported three deer hunting incidents over the weekend, with two being fatal.
