AFFTON, MO (KPLR)- Two people were injured in a crash involving a St. Louis County police cruiser Tuesday afternoon. The crash happened a little around 2:30pm on Gravois Road at Grantview Lane, not far from Grant’s Farm.

Police say several officers were responding to a call of a suicidal person at Truman Middle School, just a couple of miles from the scene of the crash. They were traveling with lights and sirens on when police say the GMC Yukon pulled out in front of the police cars.

One of the officers slammed on his brakes trying to avoid the SUV, but he couldn't. The two vehicles crashed almost head on, with the police car careening off the road.

The 62-year old female driver of SUV  was apparently not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the SUV. She is listed in Critical condition at an area hospital.

The officer's airbags deployed, but he was able to get himself out of the car. Police say he tried to administer first aid to the woman until medics arrived.

Police don't know how fast the police car was traveling. They are also looking into whether the wet weather was a factor in the crash. Gravois will remain closed near Grant’s Farm until accident reconstruction crews complete their investigation.
