GRANITE CITY, MO (KTVI)-Groundbreaking for the South Harbor Terminal at America’s Central Port in Granite City was held Monday morning. It marks the start of the second phase of the project that began in late 2012. When completed, the South Harbor will open up more transportation opportunities for Madison County and the St. Louis region.
Located south of Lock and Dam 27, it allows for commerce in free flowing water between St. Louis and the port of New Orleans. Six major railroads and four interstate highways can brings good to the new port.
The new harbor will create news jobs in the area.
A fireboat will also be anchored there to work up and down the river with the Port Authority.
