ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)- This month more than 1,000 owl butterflies will take flight during the annual October Owls and Orchids event. The Butterfly House`s 8,000-square-foot tropical conservatory generally houses 150 owl butterflies which are easily recognized by their chocolate-hued wings and bring yellow markings that resemble an owl eye.
Throughout October, there will be more than 10 times the standard number of these butterflies representing three species: Caligo eurilochus, Caligo atreus and Caligo memnon. October Owls and Orchids daytime events are included with regular admission.
Children can wear costumes and ‘trick or treat’ in the outdoor Butterfly Garden and take home loot. Tickets are $8 for the general public and $4 for Missouri Botanical Garden members. Reservations required.
