ST. CLAIR COUNTY, IL (KPLR)-Severe thunderstorms Monday afternoon brought heavy rain, damaging wind gusts, and the threat of tornados to the St. Louis region.

The most damage was done in St. Clair County, IL, between the eastern edge of Belleville and the town of Freeburg. A tornado touched down along State Route 13/15, not far from the Eckert’s Country Store and Farm. Home and tree damage was numerous in the area.

Farther east, one barn collapsed and another barn lost its roof as the storms roared through New Baden on the Clinton County line. Sheet metal could be seen sticking out of trees. It is not known at this time if the damage was done by a tornado.  National Weather Service crews will investigate.

In Ruma, IL, farther south in Randolph County, strong wind gusts damaged houses and several large trees as storms blew through.
