JENNINGS, MO (KTVI)- St. Louis county police shot and killed a man in what started as a domestic violence situation overnight.
The shooting occurred around 11pm Wednesday at the Windfall Trace apartment complex on Jeff Kenn Drive near Lucas & Hunt.
Around 8:30 pm, a woman who lives at the complex called police saying a man was at her door with a sawed off shotgun. The woman and the man knew each other and may have been romantically involved in the past.
When police arrived a few minutes after the call, the man was already gone. Then around 10:45pm, the woman called police again saying the man had returned.
The police returned and saw the man inside of a car. As two officers got out of their cruisers to approach him, the man gunned his car, hitting both police cruisers as the officers dove out of the way.
At that point, the man grabbed a long rifle out of his car and took off running with the officers chasing him.
County police spokesperson Sergeant Brian Schellman says the man got behind a backhoe of some kind and pointed the rifle at the officers. That`s when both officers fired the deadly shots. Schellman believes the use of deadly force was justified.
The officers were not hurt.
Neither was the woman who called police.
