Chief Belmar defends military-style use of force in Ferguson

CLAYTON, MO (KTVI) – St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar is defending the use of military-style equipment during last month’s unrest in Ferguson.

In an interview with USA Today, Belmar says using the heavy-armored trucks and other military equipment helped keep civilians and law enforcement officers safe.

He says that extra armor offered protection to police and gave them the ability to not fire their guns.   The actions of officers in Ferguson have spurred a national debate about the militarization of police departments.
