MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO (KTVI) - A 12 year-old Maryland Heights boy dies after accidentally hanging himself on a backyard swing Friday at his family`s home in the 2700 block of Eldon Avenue.

Ethan Ivinson came home from school as usual Friday afternoon, but was planning to go back that night.

'He was helping his dad do some chores in the backyard,' said Maryland Heights Police Chief William Carson. 'He was planning to go to a school dance that evening and was doing extra chores so he could go to the dance.'

But when his dad went inside to take a phone call, Ethan began spinning on a homemade swing fashioned from a child`s pumpkin seat suspended by ropes hanging from a high tree branch.

Police say Ethan got caught in the ropes and accidentally hanged himself.

Ethan`s father was already trying to give his son CPR when police and firefighters arrived.

Ethan was a seventh grader at Pattonville Heights Middle School.

'It has been pretty devastating for the school,' said Pattonville School District spokesperson Mickey Schoonover. 'From what I have heard he was a really sweet kid and everyone is very shaken up by what happened."

'We have some great counselors who can help kids work through their emotions and what they are going through,' she said.
