Police officer shot in north St. Louis County

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KPLR)-A police officer was shot overnight in north St. Louis County and the search is on for the suspect.

The shooting took place just off Lucas and Hunt, not far from the Norwood Country Club. St. Louis County police responded a disturbance in the 5800 block of Eagle Valley Drive. Neighbors told police that a African-American male had been trying to enter a home there and that they had seen a running out the back.

When officers arrived, they saw a man quickly enter a gray Dodge Avenger.  He immediately backed out of a parking space.  As the officers approached the car in an attempt to talk to the man, he drove towards them.  It then stopped abruptly, and several gunshots were fired from inside the car at the officers.

One of the rounds struck one of the officers in his gun belt.  The second officer, a Velda City Police Officer, returned fire at the suspect.  The vehicle fled the scene.  It is unknown if the suspect was struck by return fire from the police officer.

The St. Louis County Police Officer, who has been with the department a little more than one year, was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect in the shooting was later identified as 27-year-old Eric Fowler. He's been charged with assault first degree on a police officer, and armed criminal action. Flower is consider armed and dangerous.
