ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – A double shooting in north St. Louis Sunday afternoon leaves one man dead and one woman wounded.  Family members say Mario Washington was the shooting victim who did not survive.  Police say the victim was shot multiple times, including the torso, arms, buttocks and legs .  Police say the female was shot in the leg, and is expected to survive.

Washington’s brother held back tearful family member trying to run through police tape at the intersection of 19th and Ferry Streets.  They wanted to see their loved one.  His body lay in a weed-covered field while investigators searched the area for evidence.

“I just want to know what happened,” said Greg Washington, Mario’s brother.

Police say their investigation has revealed a vehicle occupied by several unknown males began shooting as they victims left a nearby store.

Family members said their loved one was killed when he turned back to help the female who was shot.  Police have not released details of their investigation because it is ongoing.

“He was a good dude,” said Washington.  “He just celebrated the birth of a child last night.”

The victim’s brother did not have any idea why his brother would be the target for violence.

“I don’t understand why this happened like this,” said Washington.
