(KTVI) - The Cardinals have a different look Friday morning after being part of a major shake up right before the baseball trade deadline. The Redbirds sent Allen Craig and Joe Kelly to the Boston Red Sox. In return, the Cards will get pitcher John Lackey from Boston.
This was a surprise deal that really shook up the Cardinals Clubhouse. The hope is that bringing in a seasoned veteran pitcher such as John Lackey, will help the Cardinals make a run for October. Lackey is a big "right-hander" has 11 wins this year for the Boston team that has been bad this year. His career record is 149 and 114 with an era of just over four. He has two World Series rings; One with the Angels and one with the Red Sox.
He beat the Cardinals in game six of last years Fall Classic.
Allen Craig had more than 90 RBI`s over the past two seasons with the Cardinals and was one of the heroes in the 2011 World Series with three home runs. His production has been down this year. He was only hitting 237. He has had a hard time getting the ball out of the infield.
Kelly grabbed the final spot in the Redbirds starting rotation in the spring then pulled a hamstring while running the bases. That really set him back.
While Craig found out he had been traded on TV, Kelly learned about it on Twitter.
Manager Mike Matheny spoke about the situation.
The Cardinals are two games behind the Brewers in the National League Central division. The Brew Crew is in town for a three game series at Busch starting Friday.
The Red Sox are here next Tuesday through Thursday.
We could certainly see Lackey pitch soon as well as Justin Masterson from the Cleveland Indians.
