Michael Sam gives emotional speech after accepting Arthur Ashe Award at the ESPYs

(KPLR) - Former Mizzou star Michael Sam won the "Arthur Ashe Courage Award" at the ESPY's Wednesday night.

The Rams defensive end was saluted for his courage in becoming the first openly gay player drafted by the NFL.

An emotional Sam said great things can happen when you have the courage to be yourself and he spoke about becoming an inspiration to others.

Sam also thanked his Mizzou teammates and the Rams organization including head coach Jeff Fisher and GM Les Snead who were at the ceremony.
