(KPLR) - An army of armed forces vets and civilian volunteers will converge on Powder Valley for a one day, extreme makeover of the nature center this Saturday! Tamie Yeggie, Manager of Powder Valley along with Darionte Johnson from The Mission Continues are here to tell us more about the Summer Service Slam and how you can join in for the transformation.

How it works:

  • A Mission Continues Service Platoon will provide the organization, logistics and leadership
  • Hundreds of veterans and civilian volunteers will provide the elbow grease to get the jobs done
  • Workers will split up into groups led by TMC leaders to tackle a number of projects
  • FOX Sports Midwest joins the effort as a media partner. They will produce a feature story about the Service Slam the day of the event which will be broadcast during a future Cardinals baseball game

What to expect:

  • Building a fire ring and seating area for public programs
  • Cleaning the 3,000 gallon aquarium
  • Servicing trails by adding mulch, creating log barriers, and repairing asphalt
  • Building sitting benches along trails
  • Pond reconstruction
  • Removal of invasive bush honeysuckle and garlic mustard
  • Lunch, water all tools and T-shirts will be provided
