GRANITE CITY, IL (KPLR) – An officer involved shooting in Granite City has left one St. Charles man dead.  Around 4:15 a.m. Wednesday morning, police received a call for a distraught individual at the Phillips 66 gas station on Route 203 at Maryville Road.  When Granite City officers arrived, they found a man inside of his car located behind the building.

As two officers approached the car, the individual pointed a gun at them.  Officers gave the man several commands to drop his weapon but he refused.

At that point, the officers felt in fear of their lives, discharged their service weapons, and shot the individual several times.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  The man has been identified as a 45-year-old white male from St. Charles, Missouri.

His name has not been released at this time and there is no word on why he was distraught.

It is also believed that the suspect called police himself.

The store was not open at the time.

The Illinois State Police have taken over this investigation.
