BONNE TERRE, MO (KPLR) – The state of Missouri executed convicted killer John Winfield just after midnight at the state prison in Bonne Terre.  A jury convicted him of shooting and killing Arthea Sanders and Shawnee Murphy at their Vinita Park apartment in 1996.

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected his final appeal, after a stay of execution was vacated by a federal appeals court. Governor Jay Nixon also refused to grant clemency for Winfield.
