HECKER , ILLINOIS ( KPLR ) A former Cold War Missile base in Hecker Illinois is up for sale and set to hit the auction block on July 12. The historic site once guarded the St. Louis region against a possible nuclear strike. The Shutter Nike Missile Base is tucked away behind a gated fence near the Monroe County Village of Hecker Illinois with a population of about 500.
It's been shuttered since 1969 and all of the missiles are long gone. Now more than 40 years later, the historic base is up for sale to the public to highest bidder. "If you go back to Cold War times ,the history on this site was a part of a Missile Defense System for the City of St. Louis . The army's plan for potential defense missile launches versus a Soviet airplanes, said Mark Stuart, Career Center of Southern Illinois.
The 14-acre site includes 3 underground concrete bunkers, each approximately 68’ x 76’ and 18’ deep with 10’10”+- ceiling clearance. The 3 bunkers have 9’6” x 53'8” elevator pads which are operational. One bunker contains several stacks of foam insulation board which will not be removed. Other buildings include the shop, pump house and generator building. "In other parts of the United States developers have converted the de-activated missile sites into luxury homes or portions of their interiors into swimming pools, said Stuart.
Brenda Chandler decided to bring her family to the site just to get a glimpse of history before it's sold. " We heard about it and never had the opportunity to see it and it's very neat that a piece of history is this close to Hecker, said Chandler.
The opening bid has been set for $70, 000 and prospective buyers can get a per-auction look at the property June 26 and June 27. For more information call 1-800-357-4020.
