Thousands outraged after injured stray dog goes untreated for days

GRANITE CITY, IL (KPLR) - Thousands of people on Facebook are expressing anger at the treatment of an injured dog at the Granite City Animal Control Center. A rescue group has stepped in to get the dog veterinary care.

The dog was seriously injured when it was hit by a car early Sunday morning in Granite City. It was taken to the city animal control center. A rescue group says it stayed there untreated for more than two days. A center volunteer called partners for pets to see if they could help. The organization tracked down the owner who said he cold no longer afford to care for the animal and turned it over to the group.

The dog is now being be treated at the Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital in Granite City. Congo, who is a large Shepherd mix, is now getting some tender loving care. His right rear leg was seriously injured and his hip was knocked out of its socket. The dog has been getting medical care, antibiotics and painkillers. Partners for Animals says the animal control center said its policy was to hold the dog for awhile because it was a stray.

Partners For Pets says the Granite City mayor has now told the animal control center to contact a rescue group if its receives an injured animal and not hold it for five days if its a stray. Congo, the dog, does face more surgery. It is not yet know if doctors will be able to save his right rear leg.
