(KTVI)-- We all know this past winter was tough, but as the weather warms up, our thoughts turn to enjoying the outdoors.

Right on schedule, Great Rivers Greenway is set to open three trails just in time for spring.

Workers are putting the final touches on the rebuilt River Des Peres Trail, one of three trails opening as part of Great Rivers Greenway ring trail system.

Funded with sales tax revenue, grants and federal funding, the trails are ready to be used by cyclists, runners and pedestrians.

The trails provide an alternative to riding on city streets and give people connecting routes to different parts of the metro area.

The 2nd trail is in Maryland Heights off McKelvey Road, the 3rd is in St. Charles County near the community college.

All are a large part of the ring trail system, a multi-year construction effort.

One idea Great Rivers is trying to include in all their projects are green features, like this living wall that will grow into a green wall along the trail.

The River Des Peres Trail is expected to see over 100,000 people each year.

The grand opening and ribbon cutting is May 8th, with a celebration at the Shrewsbury Metrolink Station.
