NEAR PARK HILLS, MO (KPLR) – A tragic fire in which the bodies of a married couple were discovered has turned into a homicide investigation near Park Hills Missouri.

The St. Francois County Sheriff has launched an investigation, after the coroner discovered that it was not fire that killed the couple, it was a murderer.

A home owned by 50-year-old Stanley Halter and his 46-year-old wife Tammy was destroyed by an early morning fire Monday.

His body was found on the back porch Tammy’s body was in the kitchen.

The sheriff says he knows how they were killed, but is not releasing that information right now, he doesn`t want to jeopardize the investigation.

The halters had no criminal history and are described as wonderful folks by neighbors.

From his more than 20 years of experience the sheriff suspects the killer is someone who knew the couple

Sheriff Dan Bullock says: We don`t really believe that there`s someone out there just randomly killing people and setting their house on fire this is a remote neighborhood, dead end roads.

Pat Doba/Neighbor says: Hardworking people, good people as far as I know they worked hard and they were kind neighbors

Although detectives have a few leads the sheriff says they could use the public`s help. Anyone can call with information anonymously.  He said even the smallest piece of information could solve the case.
