Cardinals sign Cuban shortstop Aledmys Diaz

JUPITER, FL (KTVI) – The St. Louis Cardinals have signed Cuban shortstop Aledmys Diaz to a Major League contract that will see the Cuban star in the Cardinals spring training camp in Jupiter Monday, March 10th.

Diaz, 23, batted .315 with 12 home runs with  11 stolen bases in his finals season with Los Naranjas de Villa Clara in Cuba’s Serie Nacional professional league in 2012. Serie Nacional is Cuba’s highest level professional league.

It’s expected that Diaz will start his career at a high minor league level.

Diaz, born on August 1, 1990 in Santa Clara, Villa Clara, Cuba, and has played in several  international tournaments, including the 2010 World University Championship in Tokyo, Japan.

Diaz currently lives in Mexico City, Mexico.
