(KPLR) - The Humane Society of Missouri rescued 11 starving horses from Southwest Missouri on Friday. The owner in Laclede County agreed to surrender the animals.

The horses are now being examined at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Missouri. Officials made several recommendations on proper care over the last few weeks, but their condition continued to get worse. Most of the horses are extremely thin and had no access to water and very little hay.

The Rescue Ranch hopes to put as many of the horses as possible up for adoption.
