(KTVI) - Thursday's heavy winds are still causing problems.  More than 7,000 homes and businesses are without power in the St. Louis area.

About six utility poles in the hard-hit area of Florissant, Missouri are snapped.  Ameren crews have been working all night to restore power to residents, but high winds continued over night making power restoration more difficult.

At last check, more than 8,500 Missouri customers were without powerand about 70 in Illinois were in the dark.

Ameren says customers who are without power, or those wanting to report other power-related issues, such as low-hanging or downed lines should contact Ameren Missouri at or by calling 1.800.552.7583.

Ameren says never assume they are aware of your outage.

They also advise residents to stay away from downed lines and always assume them are energized.
