Semi slams into Cahokia home; 1,300 without power

CAHOKIA, IL (KTVI) - A tractor trailer broke two power poles, then crashed into a Metro East home Wednesday morning. Now more than 1,300 people are without electricity in Cahokia, Illinois.

The 18-wheeler hit the home at Route 3 and Water Street around 8:15am Wednesday.  Authorities say there was another car involved in the accident and that Route 3 is shut down in both directions.

The semi slammed into the home. The owner of the home, a 53-year-old man, was inside the home at the time and was pretty shaken up. He was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries to his neck and leg.

The driver of the semi was not hurt during the accident.

Power poles snapped during the accident are now dangling by the wires. Ameren Illinois crews are on the scene and working on restoring power. The mayor of Cahokia says about 10% of the village is without electricity.

Police say the semi was headed south on Route 3 when the driver lost control. The truck hit two utility poles before slamming into the brick home, knocking it off its foundation and cutting the gas line to the home.

Power is out to 1,377 residents in the area. One of the poles hit was a main line to the town. It is unclear when power will be back on for all customers affected.

Huffman Elementary in Cahokia is located down the street from the accident scene. The school has been closedand students have been released because of the power outage. The school is providing childcare for children who cannot be picked up immediately.

Crews are on the scene trying to get the truck out of the house and restore power to the area.
