ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI)-- Dave Chronister is what's known as an ethical hacker.
"Until someone tests your security it's a guess," says Dave Chronister, owner of Parameter Security. "So we actually come in and act like the bad guy."
This good guy or white hat hacker as he's also known owns St. Charles based Parameter Security.
He's been keeping an eye open for today, February 11th, what many are calling the day we fight back.
"One side keeps quoting Ben Franklin saying that those that, `Sacrifice liberty for the pursuit of security deserve neither,`" says Chronister. "But at the same time the government is fighting saying we're held responsible after 911."
Internet freedom activists are calling today a day of protest against mass surveillance, and their target, the NSA.
"A lot of the people in the security world have some concerns cause a lot of our security tools have been backdoored," says Chronister.
Meaning, not only can the government get into your computers and smart phone through the back door, but so can the bad hackers.
This is why parameter security recommends encryption for everything you own.
"There's a free software called True Crypt which is really good free tool," says Chronister. "Make sure your password is over 15 characters and it seems like a lot but use a sentence instead of an actual password."
Thousands of websites are asking Americans to support the USA Freedom Act introduced by republican Jim Sensenbrenner and Democrat Patrick Leahy.
"We're supposed to be the shining light on the hill and unfortunately right now that light is pretty dim," adds Chronister. "So I think we just all need as a country to regroup and understand what exactly we want."
After all, Chronister says, that's what our founding fathers would have done.
