(KTVI) - A young man was shot in the head early Monday morning right after he left a hotel. Now police are searching for the suspects.

Even though the victim was shot in the back of the head, police say he is in stable condition and is expected to survive. In fact, homicide detectives weren't even called in.

It happened near 10th and Market just before 1:30 a.m. Investigators say the victim and another person had just left a party at the Ramada Plaza not far from the scene. They were stopped at 10th and Convention when another car pulled up and a rear passenger started shooting.

The back window of the car that the victim was in was blown out and he was shot once in the head. Police say the victim is a 19-year-old man from north St. Louis. Authorities say the car that the victim was in sped away from 10th and Convention and wound up several blocks away at 10th and Market.

Investigators say there were two to four black males in the car where the shots came from. Officials say the car is a gray Pontiac Grand Am. A worker at the Ramada Plaza says there was a party there in one of the banquet rooms in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and that St. Louis City police were there asking questions.

So far, no one is in custody.
