Passengers rescued after train becomes stuck in snow

MENDOTA, IL. (CNN) – Passengers stranded on at least one Amtrak train are headed to their destinations.

The train got stuck on tracks northern Illinois for several hours.

Add to that — the area is being hit with frigid temperatures.

Amtrak says three trains carrying about 500 passengers are stranded.

They say the winter weather conditions are to blame.

Crews are working to re-open the tracks.

The trains reportedly have power and heat.

Amtrak says passengers were unloaded from one train and put on buses to Chicago.

Other passengers say they are being given food and water free of charge while they wait
