ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - There was fire and ice early Thursday morning in north St. Louis after a mom and pop convenience store went  up in flames.

It happened at Natural Bridge and Taylor at the Quickstop Market. The fire left behind substantial damage to the store.  The extreme cold added to the challenges that firefighters faced as they fought the flames.

Crews got the call about 1:00am Thursday. Apparently a neighbor saw the fire and called 911.  There was heavy smoke coming from the store when crews arrived.

Firefighters were able to get inside the building and fight the flames from there.
It is actually a two story building. A fire department spokesperson says the fire may have started on the first floor and spread to the second.

An official cause is still under investigation.  The store was closed when this all happened.

We're told crews spread a lot of salt when they were here so they wouldn't slip.
Fortunately, nobody was hurt.
