CHESTERFIELD, MO (KPLR) - Employees of an Ellisville jewelry store had to defend themselves Tuesday morning when two thieves tried to make off with a Rolex watch.

Ellisville police say the men stole the watch from the Clarkson Jewelers on Clarkson Clayton Center. But store employees chased them out of the store an into the parking lot.

Authorities say a physical altercation occurred, and one of the employees fired shots a the suspects. They took off in a red Honda up Clarkson Road toward Interstate 64/40.

That's when a St. Louis County Wildwood officer saw the speeding car and gave chase.

Officials say the suspects lost control of the car on the highway and crashed into a barrier on the left side of the road at I-64 and Chesterfield Parkway near Chesterfield Mall.

The two then jumped out of the car and ran across lanes of the highway. But officers were able to catch both suspects and take them into custody.

There are no injuries reported at this time. Authorities have not specified whether or not one of the suspects was hit.
