ST. LOUIS (KPLR) - The FOX2 / News 11 Food Drive is underway.  Dierbergs Markets wants to make it easier for you to help Operation Food Search feed the growing number of people facing hunger in the metro area.

“I have been with Operation Food Search for 18 years, and never have I seen the situation this difficult,” said Operation Food Search Executive Director Sunny Schaefer.
That is why the $2,500 donation Dierbergs made on Monday morning to Operation Food Search was so important.  The agency instantly bought over 300 turkeys, so clients in Missouri and Illinois could enjoy a Thanksgiving that might have been out of reach.

“Nearly 500,000 people live at or below the poverty line,” Schaefer explained.  “Those people are at risk of hunger.  One-third of those people are children.”

Operation Food Search helps stock local pantries.  Some are only open to clients a few times a month.  Northside Seventh-Day Adventist Church Food Pantry distributes donations twice a week.

“When I started 9 or 10 years ago, we had 25 individuals coming in, which represented a hundred people,” said Northside SDA Assistant Director Celeste Ferguson.  “Now, we have 100 – 125 people.  That represents twice as many.”

“Hunger is a problem that exists 365 days of the year,” Schaefer explained.  “Dierbergs donates on almost a daily basis.”

The need among the hungry might be growing.  But, just about everyone is facing tighter budgets and schedules.  So, Dierbergs is “thinking outside the bag” to keep those donations coming in.

“Operation Food Search has identified some need items, and we’ve included those in the bags,” said Dierbergs Assistant Marketing Director Todd Vasel.  “You pick those up and drop them off in a barrel here in the stores.  And, then most of our stores have what we call a virtual food bag.  When you are at the checkout, you can just pick one of the bags you likeand we’ll do all the work.”

The food drive goes through the end of December, making it a little easier for everyone to enjoy a meal on Thanksgiving or any day of the year.
