(CNN) — A 20-year-old Penn State student died early Saturday morning when he fell from the ninth-floor balcony of an off-campus apartment, police said.

According to a statement from the State College Police Department, officers were called to the Penn Tower apartments about 3:45 a.m. and found Conor Macmannis dead at the scene.

The police statement did not say whether Macmannis lived in the apartment, or whether he was visiting someone.

The preliminary investigation indicates drugs and alcohol appear to have been factors in the case, according to police, who were encouraging anyone with information to step forward.

Penn Tower is located off campus and is not part of university housing.
