ST. LOUIS (KPLR) - The St. Louis Blues made defenseman, Alex Pietrangelo, 23, a cornerstone player, Saturday;  agreeing to pay him cornerstone money.

Pietrangelo signed his new deal less than 5 full years into his NHL career, ending a 1 day training camp holdout.

He will make a reported $5.5 to $7.5 million per season;  $45.5 million total, over the next 7 years

“I think I’ve been all smiles since yesterday when things finally got announced and I was on a plane on the way down here [from Canada],” Pietrangelo, just after he signed the deal at news conference Saturday morning.

“You want to see a smile, come back October 15th, first pay day,” joked Blues President and General Manager, Doug Armstrong.  “I think we’ve had a seismic shift in commitment from the ownership group in St. Louis over the last 2 years.”

For the smiles to last, Tom Stillman’s new ownership group is banking on Pietrangelo to help drive ticket/merchandise sales and increase corporate sponsorships.

“It doesn’t matter what my salary is or what anyone else’s salary is. We’re all here for the same goal, and that’s to help bring a Stanley Cup to St. Louis,” Pietrangelo said.  “You talk about the City of St. Louis and the great people that live here.  Ever since I was 18, it’s felt like a home to me.

Win that cup, St. Louis may feel like more like his kingdom and his contract more like a bargain.
