( — Human remains found last week in the garage of a Toledo, Ohio, home are those of missing toddler Elaina Steinfurth, police confirmed Tuesday.

The remains were discovered in a box in the detached garage of a home in the 700 block of Federal Street, where the 18-month-old was last seen before she was reported missing on June 2.

Initial autopsy results were inconclusive, but Toledo police said in a news release Tuesday that DNA tests have confirmed the identity of the skeletal remains.

Police executed a search warrant at the Federal Street home on Thursday after receiving new information in the three-month investigation. The house belongs to the family of Elaina’s mother’s ex-boyfriend Steven King.

The box containing the remains was found on a shelf in the rafters, police said.

Elaina’s mother, Angela Steinfurth, told police on June 2 that the toddler disappeared from King’s house after she put her down for a nap.

Toledo police said last week that the garage was searched earlier in the investigation, but the remains were not found at the time. However, they noted that the garage was very difficult to searchand they were not able to bring cadaver dogs inside.

Angela’s stepfather, Richard Schiewe, told HLN that he also participated in a search of the garage after Elaina was first reported missing and he believes the remains were placed there at a later date.

King and Steinfurth have both been indicted on obstruction of justice charges for allegedly providing false information in the case. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Attorneys for King and Steinfurth declined to comment on Tuesday’s announcement.

Police have not specified what new information led them to conduct the search of the property on Thursday that led to the discovery of Elaina’s remains.
