ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Police said a man died in a vicious surprise attack in North St. Louis overnight.

Officers with the city's command post said someone called for help at 1:10am Monday.  They said two men were trying to get into a Chrysler sedan sitting on St. Louis Avenue near Norwood Avenue when three suspects came out of a gangway and opened fire hitting both men.

Medics rushed one man, who suffered a leg injury, to the hospital.  Doctors treated that victim and released him within a few hours.

Police say the suspects hit the second victim in the head.  That man was pronounced dead at the scene.  He was just 35 years old.  The injured survivor is 24 years old.

There was no immediate word on any arrests.
