NEAR PORTAGE DES SIOUX, MO. (KPLR) – Rescuers were called to the Mississippi River on Sunday just before 5pm but it was too late.  The man in trouble had already died.

The Missouri State Water Patrol was among the agencies responding Hideaway Harbor Park near Portage Des Sioux. Spokesman Al Nothum said the victim jumped into shallow water after the boat struck a sand bar.  It’s possible he died from striking the bottom of the river.  His friends called 911 immediately.

Authorities were not ready to release a cause of death on Sunday but said an autopsy will be performed.
