NEW YORK, NY. (KPLR) – The president is enjoying a little "R" and "R". While some question if it’s the right time to take a break, Larry Mendte looks at just how connected he is.
It`s summer time and everyone deserves a vacation from their job, except apparently the President of the United States.
He is vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard for a week and that has incurred the wrath of conservatives.
They are upset about three things:
One: That he is vacationing in Martha`s Vineyard at someone else's 7.6 million dollar house and that makes him an elitist.
Because somehow it`s elitist to vacation in a home that is rented for you than say own a huge ranch in Texas, beachfront property in Kennebunkport Maine or a big ranch of expensive acreage in southern California.
Also they can`t believe that in this time of fill in the crisis the president is taking a vacation.
Except he can do everything in Martha`s Vineyard that he can do in the oval office, especially in the digital age, he can Skype with the Joint Chiefs of Staff between the 5th and 6th holes.
#2: They think he spends too much time away from the office.
So far he has taken 61 days of vacation in 5 years.
At this same point in office George W. Bush took almost 3 times as many days.
And Ronald Reagan took twice as many.
In 1927, President Calvin Coolidge once took an extended three month vacation in South Dakota because the fishing was so good. He was unaware that state officials were stocking the rivers just upstream from his fishing spots.
The sniping about presidential vacations is silly. Can we all agree that even when we disagree with the president, that he is the president of the United States and like everyone else is entitled to time away from Washington?
If you really want to get mad at someone about vacation time, how about the members of congress? They have 239 days off this year alone. Some of the same people complaining about the president`s vacation, are on vacation. Because in politics there is no time off from hypocrisy
I`m Larry Mendte.
