ST. LOUIS, MO. (KPLR) – St. Louis has a long history with longnecks. So when Thomas Kolicko was making his story about beer, he spent a little time in our town.
'We focus on St. Louis because of the economic revitalization of what's happening with craft breweries nationwide and how they're almost indicators of economic growth for a community,' says director Thomas Kolicko.
His documentary "Crafting a Nation" focuses on one of the oldest fermented beverages known to man, but more specifically, the old world recipes getting upgraded to modern times.
'Every single brewery across the country has a very unique personality,' says Kolicko. 'It's kind of like the anti-Applebee`s where every brewery represents the region it's in.'
In 2011 there were four new craft breweries that opened in the metropolitan area; Civil Life, Perennial, Four Hands and Urban Chesnut.
With each new ale house, that's opportunity for a city.
'They hire local people, they hire them in the tap room they hire them with production,' says Kolicko. 'Then it's like, 'Oh I have to put on a new wing, I have to extend my bar.' What are they going to do? Hire a local contractor.'
While they all still include water, yeast, malt and hops, the science of suds is an experiment in creativity.
'I think that's what a lot of brewers do, it's a perfect mixture of art and science,' says Kolicko. 'Art because there's really no boundaries. You can do whatever you really want to do with beer.'
Who knew that American ingenuity could be the cure for what ails a country.
