ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Sam Dotson urged people to have fun "without fireworks this 4th of July.

He said people should leave the firework displays to the professionals.

"They have the training and all the proper safety checks, so people should not do it themselves," he said.

Hundreds of people packed the St. Louis and East St. Louis riverfront areas to watch a professional firework display.

"We do it this way because it is safer and the kids feel less scared," Julie Helte said.

The display was scheduled to start around 9 p.m., so Julie and others did other things to occupy their time.

"We played games, had some food and enjoyed ourselves," she said.
