COLUMBUS, OHIO (CNN) – Gordon Gee talked Wednesday about stepping down as president of Ohio State University.

Gee is leaving OSU after a tape surfaced of gee making controversial remarks about Roman Catholics during a meeting last December.

He is heard joking that “Those Damn Catholics” can’t be trusted.”

Gee apologized for his remarks and says it’s time for him to move on.

Gordon Gee, Outgoing Ohio State President:  I have a legitimate issue in terms of having dealt with a lot of turbulence. No one has dealt with more turbulence probably than I have, of course no one has been a university president as I have but there are very few that have done that. I think that all of that starts you to reflect on what are you going to do next — it’s not about the moment because that moment is happening. But it also causes you to reflect is this all part of where you want to see yourself moving forward.

Gee’s retirement is effective July first.
