BELLEVILLE, IL (KTVI) - Organizers at "Art On The Square" in Belleville, Illinois, hope to keep the rain away from the water colors this weekend.

The 12th annual Art On The Square opens Friday evening. This is a chance for the city of Belleville to bring in some folks from all over to this fine arts festival.

This event has been named the #1 or #2 art festival six times in the last six years.

The goal of this event is to foster the appreciation of the visual and performing arts and highlight the importance of the creative process.

Rain or shine, the show will go on because this event brings in artists from all over the world. In fact, they had more than 900 artists apply for the 100 spaces open to showcase their work.

This event is beneficial to Belleville, not just because it’s aesthetically pleasing, it's also helping pocketbooks here in the Metro East. They award almost $30,000 in prizes to the artists submitting to this event.

It is free and open to the public and if you're coming from St. Louis, you can take the MetroLink to the Scheel Station exit. There you'll find a free shuttle that will take you to downtown Belleville.
