Baby Elephant Gets Name – Priya

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – The St. Louis Zoo announced the name of the new baby elephant Monday. The baby’s name is Priya.

The public as allowed to vote on the name. Five names were suggested and Priya won with 29.4% of the vote. The name “Willow” was the runner-up.

There were a total of 53,692 votes cast.

Priya (pronounced “Pree-yah”) won with 15,777 (29.4 percent) of the total votes cast at the Zoo’s website, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest accounts or through ballots submitted at Zoo Welcome Desks and postcards mailed directly to the Zoo.

Runner-up Willow received 13,311 votes (24.8 percent); Violet received 12,508 votes (23.3 percent); Cai received 7,006 votes (13.0 percent); and Harper received 5,0084 votes (9.5 percent).

This is Ellie’s third daughter and the fourth daughter for Raja, 20, the baby’s father. Raja was the first elephant ever born at the Saint Louis Zoo.
