OLIVETTE, MO (KPLR)-- April weather has been a kick in the pants for mom and pop nursery owners.

Sales of spring goods are always strong on the weekend at businesses like Branneky Hardware, but the last four April weekends have either been cold or wet or both.

The Hartke Nursery in Olivette has been family owned for 35 years. The people in charge say business during the warm April of 2012 was 100% better than this spring.

Many gardeners don't want to shop when it's cold and rainy. Once the sun pops out, plant lovers swarm the place.

Nurseries could use a lot more warm sunny days, especially on Saturday and Sunday.

At Branneky Hardware, which has been family owned since the 1800's, sales of mowers have been slower than usual.  And no surprise, hoses and sprinklers have not been top sellers in April, the store owner says the economy hurt fertilizer sales last year, this year homeowners are making up for that and putting it down again.

Cold wet weather is forecast later this week. People who sell plants say if the nasty weather could all end by Friday night they could salvage the weekend.
