St. Louis, MO (KPLR) The Florida governor is calling for an investigation into a controversial classroom lesson at Florida Atlantic University. Professor Deandre Poole teaches communications. He asked students to write the word “Jesus” on a piece of paper, put it on the ground and stomp on it, then describe how they feel about it. The exercise was intended to show that we give meaning to symbols, not the other way around. No student was forced to participate if they didn’t want to. A student who is a devout Mormon took such offense, he refused not to do it, but also complained to the university. He wanted the exercise to stop because it is unprofessional, sacrilegious and offensive. The school has made the ruling that the exercise must stop.
